6 Must-Do’s Before Traveling Outside the United States

Traveling abroad for Americans is on the increase as more and more of us want to learn about and visit other wonderful cultures and people. Stats from the National Travel and Tourism Office, showed an 8 percent plus increase in Americans traveling to international destinations. In 2016, a total of 66,960,943 Americans traveled outside the country, However, traveling comes with real risks and dangers. These risks should not scare you off or keep you from the adventure of a lifetime. You just need to plan right and travel safe.
The truth is, what we fear most about traveling overseas is not the biggest risk you will face. Death or injury from crimes including terrorism are relatively small compared to death from accidents and illness.

Plan before you go! A good travel plan has three parts: Before you leave, Traveling/arrival, and when you are there.

Once you have decided where you are traveling to, you must begin your preparation.

1. Is your passport up to date or will it expire soon? Contact the countries embassy and see if any special Visa is required and if yes begin the process to get it. This step may take time to the sooner you plan the better Check to see if there are any travel warnings or political problems in the country. If you are traveling for a long time, make sure you get your mail held or arrange for a friend or family member to pick it up for you and check on your house as well. It is a good idea to set lights, radio or TV on timers to give the appearance someone is home. Burglars often target homes when people are traveling.

2. Get all your medical records onto your phone or tablet and get them translated into the language you are traveling to. Too many people have died traveling simply because they could not explain their medical condition in to the medial professionals in the right language.
Learn the emergency contact numbers for the country you are going, we all no America is 911 but in Japan you would dial 119.

3. Get and keep a record of how to contact the American Embassy in the country you are going to. Make sure you have the proper travel insurance, which includes medical insurance. Limit the cash you carry. Get travelers checks and credit cards you can use in the country you are traveling to.

If this seems like a lot and it can be don’t worry, there is a much easier way to travel and make sure all of this gets done. Use a trusted travel advisor! Please allow me to recommend one. Ayelet Shani-Seemann. One of reasons I recommend her is because of her military and security background. She understands risks and she puts your safety and concerns as a top priority.
